The
organisation is named after John Baptist Scalabrini, Bishop of
Piacenza (Italy). At the end of 19th century when one
million Italians were leaving Italy each year, the Scalabrini
Fathers followed these migrants all over the world. Today the
missionary body and its lay organisations assists all displaced,
people irrespective of their religion, and are present in 30
nations in the word.
The
Scalabrini Centre of Cape Town (SCCT) is a Non-profit Organisation
(021-079 NPO) committed to both alleviating poverty by promoting
development in the Western Cape and to offering assistance to refugees
and their children. The ultimate aim is that of fostering integration
between local communities and refugees.
The
Scalabrini Centre of Cape Town consists of a 4-floored building
in Commercial Street. The ground floor consists of a hall with a
stage and conference facilities. The first floor houses a network
with 20 computers, 13 of which are dedicated to training. The second
and third floors are still in need of renovation, which will start
soon. The second floor is presently being used for art studios and
the third floor contains seven rooms suitable for accommodation.
